Ozark Artist Jerry Faulkner creates her pottery in the peaceful setting that is the site of the historic Rhea's Mill in the Northwest Corner of Arkansas. Jerry returned to her native state after many years of city life in Houston, TX. When asked how she got started in pottery, Jerry replied, "I walked into the teaching studio and said, show me the wheel. I want to be a potter."
After courses at local community colleges and Galveston Art Center, Jerry went on to get her MA in Art at University of Houston Clear Lake. She feels fortunate that she was in the right place at the right time to attend workshops with many of the nation's leading potters. While in Houston, Jerry co-owned the Houston Potters Guild Shop and later owned her own gallery and teaching studio. She finds teaching a very rewarding part of her career, and says that some of her best friends were once her pottery students.
Today, Jerry and her students work in a country setting- a renovated tin barn in close proximity to cows, chickens and the resident donkey, not to mention the numerous dogs and cats. Jerry feels that her work has greatly improved since her return to the Ozarks. She says, "As potters, it is important for us to be close to the earth. You'll find most of us tend to be gardeners and animal lovers in addition to believing in the magic of clay." Her clay work focuses on both form and function. The functional work is stoneware and is mostly wheel thrown, while the decorative pieces are often hand built and more organic in design. These decorative pots are often raku or pit fired.
You can see Jerry's work on Saturdays at the Fayetteville Farmer's Market from April though Mid-November or by visiting her studio at Rhea's Mill. Call for hours.
